Lowe's Inc. 2011 CPE Series - June 14th
Join us as Lowe's Inc hosts NABA Charlotte in a day long CPE Series!

Professional Ethics and Conduct (2 CPE Hours)

Using discussion, examples, and case studies, this course examines the CPA’s role in the modern economy, standards of ethical conduct for management accountants, the four basic concepts of ethics in accounting, and the AICPA’s rules on independence. Also highlighted are the ten most common violations of North Carolina statutes and rules for CPAs. The course also examines current problems with earnings management in financial statements. Note: This course fulfills the State Board’s annual two-hour ethics CPE requirement.

Impact of Sustainability / Corporate Social Responsibility Concerns (2 CPE Hours)

Concerns over global warming and the environment have led consumers to become more conscientious of the environmental characteristics of the products they purchase. As a result, they are increasingly searching out manufacturers and product offerings that are more environmentally friendly. Companies throughout the distribution channel are responding with initiatives on sourcing for ingredients, more efficient packaging, recycling, use of by-products, and emphasis on renewable product features. Some sustainability initiatives also may provide cost saving opportunities for companies: as package weight is reduced by decreasing plastic, pulp, or other content, the package may be more environmentally friendly and may save shipping weight, in turn reducing transportation costs.

Despite today's economic challenges, corporate social responsibility and sustainability initiatives are a differentiator and opportunity in the marketplace. PwC recently released the Carbon Disclosure Project which includes reporting on S&P 500 companies and their commitments to carbon reporting and carbon reduction plans.  The results of this project will be discussed in this session along with specific references to certain tactics being undertaken to continue to reduce energy costs, secure energy supply and protect their business from climate change risk and damaged reputation and maintain carbon management as a strategic priority.  It is no longer an option, but an imperative, to drive growth and to manage costs directly to create long-term value through assessing and managing social, ethical and environmental risks and opportunities. Additionally, the U.S. Congress has introduced more than 200 propositions related to climate change and carbon cap-and-trade plans since 2007 - mean that the likelihood of a regulated cap-and-trade reporting system in the US is very real.

Diversity and Leadership (4 CPE Hours)

An increasingly fast-paced and diverse workplace puts the burden on individuals to keep up with their surrounding environment and build skills to deal with those changes.  These courses, presented by Andra Ward, are designed to ensure that employees are able to achieve a high level of engagement and interaction among professionals and foster healthy and productive collaborations.  It also contributes to the development of or maintenance of technical and/or nontechnical professional skills in the area of personal development.
